When to water
The best time is first thing in the morning or at dusk, when it is cooler and less water evaporates. Avoid the middle of the day.
Deep watering, not frequent watering
It is better to water less often but with more water, so that it reaches the roots. That way plants cope better with hot days.
How much water it needs
It depends on the soil, the plant and the exposure. As a rough guide, a deep watering is around 10 to 20 litres per square metre. A 100 m² garden would then need between 1,000 and 2,000 litres per watering, which is less than one 12,000-litre tanker.

Save water with drip irrigation
Drip irrigation delivers water directly to the roots and reduces consumption. A layer of mulch (bark or straw) around the plants helps retain moisture.
