Cistern or tank: which to choose and how to fill it

Two ways of storing water at a house, estate or warehouse. We explain how they differ and what to prepare to fill them with a water tanker.

What each one is

A cistern is a built-in tank, usually underground or semi-underground, designed to hold large quantities of water. A tank is a container, often plastic or metal, placed on the ground or on a terrace or in a utility room.

When a cistern makes sense

  • When you need a lot of capacity, for example on an estate or in a warehouse.
  • When you want it to take up little visible space.

When a tank makes sense

  • When you need a medium capacity and want to install it without building work.
  • When you would like to be able to move it or extend it with another tank.

What capacity to choose

Think about how much water you use in the longest period between two fills. Since each tanker carries 12,000 litres, a capacity that is a multiple of 12,000 litres avoids part-loaded trips.

What to prepare before filling it

  • That the tanker can reach the cistern or tank by road or track.
  • That the filling opening is accessible and free of obstacles.
  • That it is clean and in good condition before receiving the water.
  • That you know how many litres it holds, so the trips can be worked out.

If you need yours filled, see the cistern and tank filling service.
