Cleaning and maintaining tanks and cisterns

A well-kept tank or cistern preserves the water it stores better. Here is how often to clean it and what to bear in mind when filling it.

Why they need maintenance

Over time, sediment, limescale and biofilm build up on the walls and the stored water loses quality. A regular check prevents odours, strange tastes and breakdowns in pumps and filters.

How often to clean it

  • At least once a year.
  • Whenever it has been empty or unused for a long time.
  • If you notice a smell, cloudiness or sediment when you open the tap.

How to clean it step by step

  1. Empty the tank completely and remove any debris from the bottom.
  2. Scrub the walls and floor with a stiff brush and water.
  3. Apply a limescale remover if there are deposits and rinse with plenty of water.
  4. Disinfect the walls with a chlorine solution and rinse until no residue remains.
  5. Check the lid, vents and seals so that no insects or dirt can get in.

Water for human consumption: what you need to know

If you plan to use the water from the tank or cistern for drinking or cooking, it is drinking water and its control is regulated by the health authorities (Sanidad). It must be checked regularly and you must make sure the incoming water meets the regulations. Not every transport company is authorised to supply water for human consumption, so always ask before hiring and request the relevant documentation.

You can check on the Balearic Government's Environmental Health website which companies hold a health registration in Mallorca, and make sure the one you hire is on the list.

Tips for keeping the water quality up

  • Keep the tank closed and protected from light.
  • Avoid mixing water from different sources without checking it.
  • If it will go unused for a long time, empty it or renew the water regularly.
  • Always use cleaning and chlorination products suitable for this purpose and follow the manufacturer's doses.

For capacity and filling, see the guide on cistern or tank and our cistern and tank filling service.

To disinfect, here is a chlorine dioxide product we recommend on Amazon; you can also ask for one at a specialist shop. Always follow the manufacturer's doses.
